Teaching History Through Film

Course Description

This mini-course will explore how film is used to teach history to modern audiences. Using films like Clash of the Titans (1981), Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail and Raiders of the Lost Ark, students will explore how filmmakers become history teachers by combining fact and fiction, and how film helps us learn about the past (for better and worse). At the end of the week, students will have a chance to analyse a historical production in order to determine how the filmmaker chose to present history to their viewers, and to teach their classmates about a period in history.
