Course Description

Ever wondered how Canada decides which refugees to admit? In 2022, over 90,000 people applied for asylum in Canada, but less than half were granted refugee status. How does the government decide who to let in?

This course will give you an introduction to Canadian and international refugee law and let you practice applying the law to simulated cases. We will discuss the reasons people flee their homes and how government decision-makers evaluate their claims. You will learn how to do legal research for refugee law matters and then use what you find to roleplay a simulated case through a mock trial.
