Youth and the Law: Understanding the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Institution: University of Ottawa (FTX351)
Category: Faculty of Law
Language: English

Course Description

This class would provide students with the opportunity to learn about the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The course would explore the ways in which the youth interact with the criminal justice system in Canada. I would also like to cover topics such as the most common offences, risk factors surrounding criminal justice, police procedures, trials, sentencing, and rehabilitation for young offenders.

The teaching method would be a lecture style but I would like to include and interactive approach to the lesson so students can be engaged with the material. I foresee including student handouts, acting out fictional scenarios, and also including real-life case studies.
