Sustainable Agriculture & Community Gardens

Course Description

The course I wanted to teach would be called "Sustainable Agriculture and Community Gardens" and it would be a place-based, experiential learning opportunity that combines lecture-style learning about community gardens (how they are run, how to potentially start one, etc.) along with practical work within a community garden (ideally the GSA's Kitiganensag Garden on campus).

This is relevant to the Social Work department and my future career as a community-based social worker, as community gardens build capacity, supports food sovereignty and the students will be able to learn more about green social work/food movements. I also have experience facilitating youth programming, and hope to facilitate similar programs to this mini-course proposal as part of my career in the future.

Part of the course would include practical, hands-on education on seed saving, supported by Joey Slinger, manager of Willow Trellis Farms and 2025 CUROP recipient, who is currently setting up the Carleton University Seed Library.
