Course Description
Should someone be fined for asking for spare change? Should they go to jail for sleeping on a park bench? In this course we’ll look at how Canadian laws impact people who are homeless. We will cover laws and legislation ranging from Ottawa’s Shopping Cart Bylaw, Ontario’s Safe Streets Act, to Canada’s Criminal Code. You’ll learn look critically at the law and examine how the criminal justice system affects people living in extreme poverty. We’ll also look at how laws are enforced and talk to people advocating for more housing. You can expect to be challenged to rethink preconceptions about people who are homeless. During the week you will get out of the classroom and be actively involved in understanding homelessness in a whole new way.
