Adventures in Geotechnical Engineering: Soil, Structures, and Natural Hazards.

Institution: University of Ottawa ()
Category: Faculty of Engineering
Language: English

Course Description

This one-week mini-course introduces students to the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering and the critical role soil plays in supporting the built environment. Through clear explanations, guided discussions, visual examples, and simple problem-solving activities, students explore how soil behaves, why foundations are needed, and how engineers address challenges such as settlement, landslides, and earthquakes. Real-world case studies help students understand how geotechnical engineers design safe and resilient structures. The course emphasizes observation, critical thinking, and practical engineering insight while offering an accessible introduction to an important field of civil engineering.

Biography

I am a PhD candidate in geotechnical engineering at the University of Ottawa. My research focuses on soil behaviour under seismic loading, sensitive marine clays, and advanced numerical modelling. I have experience teaching labs, and being teaching assistant since I was an undergraduate student.
