How to become an Econ Detective?

Institution: Carleton University (Carleton University)
Category: Faculty of Public Affairs
Language: English

Course Description

The work Economists do is a lot like being a detective. With an economics lens in hand, we look for clues in the data, and mixed with some creative thinking and reasoning, uncover the actual reasons for some seemingly odd outcomes that we observe around us. With the arrival of bigger and more detailed datasets and "super-super" computers, there is great optimism about solving the major challenges of the 21st century like global inequality and hunger, economic development through empowerment of women, education, health, immigration, trade and climate change. We will cover some real-world examples in a story-telling way of how one can find the hidden side of things and understand the world better and shape it for good.
